The Perfect Storm of Serendipity

I imagine that to some degree just about every biomedical research scientist has been where I was in September of 2004; scooped! As an eager second-year academic post-doc at the time, I was fully engaged in a couple of very promising projects related to hepatic and intestinal health that I thought would be the niche I would fill for the long-term.  In particular, my primary focus was developing a probiotic bacterium transformed with a recombinant plasmid designed to deliver a protein critically involved in maintenance of intestinal health.
